BERTH TWO BEYOND CARBON

Capturing New Export Opportunities

The Hydrogen Opportunity

When it comes to global energy markets and addressing the climate change challenge, hydrogen and hydrogen carriers are potential game changers. Hydrogen is an abundant energy source, can be cleanly produced and generates zero carbon when burned. It’s been projected that hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels will account for 10% of global energy use by 2050.

Hydrogen, however, is challenging to transport. So in the near-term, harnessing the potential of a hydrogen carrier, like ammonia, is a much more likely path forward for Canada.

“Hydrogen-as-ammonia” – an easier to handle combination of hydrogen and nitrogen – is already shipped globally in large volumes, using existing rail infrastructure and operational expertise. Hydrogen can either be extracted from ammonia after shipment, or ammonia has the potential to be used as a clean-burning fuel itself.

Handling new commodities at Trigon, like hydrogen-as-ammonia, will require new infrastructure and that’s why we’re building our Berth Two Beyond Carbon (B2BC) Project, scheduled for operations in late 2028 or early 2029.

While various commodities may be handled across this new berth, it is the first Canadian export infrastructure to have been specifically designed to advance the low-carbon export economy.

B2BC will significantly expand and diversify our handling capacity. After successful permitting – and given the berth’s potentially pivotal role in advancing Canadian low-carbon goals – the Government of Canada awarded a $75 million grant from the federal National Trade Corridors Fund, and construction began in late 2022.

Additional unloading equipment, storage facilities and related infrastructure will also be required, and will be located on existing industrial-zoned land within our terminal site. We initiated early-stage engagement and consultations for this infrastructure development in 2023 and they continue.
