The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) has accepted Trigon’s proposed $750+-million, open-access LPG export facility for environmental review under the federal Impact Assessment Act (IAA). Trigon’s project will now advance through the IAAC review process towards a decision from the Minister of Environment and Climate Change.
As the review progresses, Trigon will be seeking feedback and input from local communities and Indigenous Nations, with Indigenous engagement already underway and the first public open houses being planned for mid-July – stay tuned for updates!
What is LPG? Liquid Petroleum Gas, also referred to as propane and butane, is a byproduct of oil and gas production. Widely used as fuel for cooking and heating, LPG is a lower-carbon and cleaner-burning alternative. With strong growth in Canadian production and Asia-Pacific demand, there is an urgent need for more export capacity on Canada’s west coast.
What is the Trigon Pacific LPG about? The project will provide annual throughput capacity of 2.4 million metric tonnes per year (or 76,275 barrels per day) with onsite storage capacity of 158,000 m3. Since Trigon already provides LPG train unloading and vessel loading services for a nearby LPG facility, we can leverage existing infrastructure and expertise. This means much lower environmental impact.
The project will be sited on repurposed land in Trigon’s existing coal storage yard. The LPG will be loaded on vessels from Trigon’s existing berth one using the existing loading arms. No significant effects are anticipated from the Project.
What’s next? At Trigon, we are working hard to advance our project and meet the export capacity needs of Canadian producers and offtake partners, as well as to support Canada’s trade diversification and resiliency goals. We welcome feedback and look forward to connecting with our communities soon.
