May 22, 2025 / Prince Rupert, BC – North Coast children 6 to 12 years old will have a new summertime activity option this year, which will help build better understanding and connection with the region’s spectacular and unique ecosystems.
With financial support from Trigon Terminal’s Community Investment Fund, the North Coast Ecology Centre Society (NCECS) will offer new multi-day Ecology Camps in Prince Rupert. Under the direction of qualified staff, campers will be able to get up close with local marine life at the NCECS’s interactive Ecology Centre, and will also head outdoors for games, nature walks and science-based activities.
“We live in an incredibly beautiful and ecologically diverse part of the world,” said NCECS Chair, Sandra Penner. “But we often take the amazing things that are in our own backyards for granted. Through this program, we will give local children a better appreciation of the natural riches around us, and how we can responsibly enjoy and help conserve them.”
This new initiative follows the successful delivery of an in-school program to local elementary students, and will include four different program sessions throughout July. Each will be three days long, Monday to Wednesday, 1:00-4:00 pm. Sessions will have varying themes including: Coastal Connections: Life along the Water, and Shoreline to Deep Water. Staff availability allowing, additional intakes will be offered later in the summer.
“One of our core objectives at Trigon is to make sure we are operating with full consideration for surrounding ecosystems,” said Craig Olley, Trigon’s President. “That is done through both our responsible day-to-day operations, as well as special projects, like the marine habitat enhancements we made while building our second berth. We’re pleased to extend that commitment to help build ecological awareness among local children.”
The NCESC runs programming and special events and operates a pop-up ecology centre in the Cow Bay area of Prince Rupert in the summer months – the third season opened on May 16 – while working towards the creation of a permanent local ecological education centre.
