Trigon has made a $75,000 commitment to the Kaien Island Trail Enhancement and Recreation Society to support the construction of the first phase of the new Cloudberry Trail. Upon completion, this 4.3-km multi-use trail will connect the Prince Rupert Civic Centre with the Tall Trees/Butze Rapids Trailheads, significantly extending the local network of trails and multi-use pathways.
“Easy access to nature is one of the best features of North Coast life and soon it will be even better”, says Trigon CEO Rob Booker. “We commend Kaien Trails and the community of volunteers for advancing this project, and for their commitment to providing more active, and also more accessible ways of getting around on Kaien Island.”
Guided by a master plan developed in 2017, Kaien Trails manages existing trails in and around Prince Rupert, while working to expand the community trail network. The Cloudberry Trail will allow for two-way walking, running and cycling use, and will feature low gradients to allow for the greatest possible accessibility.
The first phase will involve a 1.2-km section extending from the Civic Centre to approximately Prince George Street, and will include a picnic area for public use. Completion is anticipated by March 2024.
“We welcome Trigon’s support for the Cloudberry Trail project, and their commitment to supporting the local community,” says Kaien Trails President Sean Carlson.
“The Cloudberry Trail is an estimated $5 million project and a significant undertaking for a volunteer, non-profit society. The contributions from local industrial partners like Trigon are key to the success of the project and our ability as a local society to support our community. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with Trigon and other donors, partners, and stakeholders as we implement the full vision for Prince Rupert’s trail network.”
